Car Drawings are maps made by the viberations of a moving vehicle with a hand-held pen on paper. The maps visually interpret different routes on a sensory level.
The history of Sensory Maps
• July 2004 – 9 hours and 59 minutes of observation in Norway, Anna Ruth’s first “Car Drawings” were made in the exploration of northern Norway. This project resulted in 8 Car Drawings and 8 photographs.
• July 2006 – Around the world in eight days is the second car drawing collaboration between Anna Ruth and Juho Jäppinen. This project consisted in driving around the perimeter of Finland within eight days. The expanse of road covered, is represented by 35 car maps. This project was also compiled into a book published by Mäntykustannus Publishing Company, Finland 2007.
• November 2006 – Taxi drawings – the forbidden zone was made during a residency in Johannesburg, South Africa. The maps were made using the combi/taxi transportation system. For this project Anna Ruth was accompanied by South African Photographer Andrew Tshabangu. Two maps were made of the volatile Hillbrow neighbourhood.
• January 2009 - March 2010 – Sensory Maps of the City of Vancouver, were commissionned by the City of Vancouver as part of the Mapping and Marking 2010 Artist-Initiated and Public Art Projects in corrilation with the Vancouver Olympics 2010. The resulting maps used the public transportation system of Vancouver and specifically interpretated the Seabus, twenty bus routes, and the complete Skytrain Millennium line. This project was a collaboration between Anna Ruth and Juho Jäppinen. Thirteen posters were displayed in bus-shelter advertisment placements around the city and the complete collection of drawings was later shown at the Emily Carr University's Concourse Gallery and published in a book by ECU Press in Vancouver, 2010.
