Syksy (Autumn) – Anna Ruth
In Finland, autumn comes at the end of August and lasts until the first snow in October or November. It is a cold and dark period when the leaves die and all green vanishes. This series of drawings was made in autumn, while thinking about the birds as they prepare for departure towards warmer places; thinking about the mono-toned landscape of the coming winter and the last jewels of colour: harvesting and storing them, until spring.
Winter is lonely and bare but it is also filled with magic. Life is suspended in the air, like a drop of water, frozen in mid-fall, which will not touch the ground until the sun and warmth come back in April. The series of drawings “Syksy” is my interpretation of the feelings that come between autumn and winter.
Plants and animals are a constant source of inspiration in my work. The apples in these drawings do not symbolise one thing: they can be temptation, morality, hope, nourishment, colour or life. In previous work I have often used fruit to represent relationships or desire. The animals are not personifications, although I am conscious of a close connection between animals and people and repeatedly use animals to symbolise raw, unanalysed emotion.
My work is figurative, minimalist and poetic. Line and two-dimensional texture are the base of my creation. I use colour sparingly and an untouched paper surface is always included in my drawings. Reoccurring themes deal with territory, maps and other fabricated abstractions that are used to define space. I am interested in ideas that make us, as a society, feel secure, stable and infinite. While I work, my mind is always full of thoughts, which I try to resolve as I draw.
